  128. Welcome to Hong Kong Pictures Archive (HKPA), the first ever collection
  129. of Hong Kong related pictures on Internet. HKPA is located at
  130. /pub/hongkong/hkpa directory of ftp site: asia.lcs.mit.edu [18.24.0.72].
  131.  
  132. There are already many ftp sites around the world which keep an archive
  133. (a collection/storage) of GIF images. However, images which related to
  134. HK are still kept privately these days. The generation of HKPA is to
  135. open a way to exhibit the HK culture around the world.
  136.  
  137. People are free to obtain picture files from the site and are encouraged
  138. to contribute pictures which are related to Hong Kong.

  141. 3002)    WHAT is GIF files?
  142.  
  143. GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. It is a data representation
  144. of a graphics image in binary form. GIF files can be put on the background 
  145. of your workstations or PC's or viewed in a separate window. It records up
  146. to 256 colors, and it offers a very good data compression without losing
  147. the picture quality when viewing.
  148.  
  149. In order to view GIF picture files, one must have a picture viewer software
  150. which supports GIF format.
  151.

  153. 3003)    What picture format is being used in HKPA?
  154.  
  155. As GIF is so popular which offers a very good reproduction quality and data
  156. compression, it is being used for storing pictures in HKPA.

  159. 3004)    Are there any picture formats other than GIF? 
  160.  
  161. There are lots of other picture formats apart from GIF. Just to name a few:
  162. BMP, TIF, TGA, JPG, PCX, and XPM. Their characteristics are mainly differed
  163. by the following:
  164.  
  165. - Number of colours supported (GIF supports 256 (8-bit) colors)
  166. - Performance on data compression (some formats have no compression which
  167.   always end up a very large picture file)
  168. - Performance when viewing (does the format require complex viewers that
  169.   slow down the display process?)
  170. - The extent of software support (from merely viewers to image processors
  171.   and desktop publishers)

  174. 3005)    What is the history of HKPA?
  175.  
  176. At the very beginning (Nov 1991) the idea was only on the collection of
  177. HK popstar pictures, which was known as the HK Popstar GIF Collection
  178. Scheme (HKPGCS). Later on, an idea of HK scenic GIF collection came up.
  179. As there are quite a lot of potential on adding more picture categories
  180. in the future, we decided to re-structure the 2 collections into one big
  181. archive called HKPA.

  218. In addition, there is a generic archive called
  219. Hong Kong Pictures Archive - Miscellaneous Collection (HKPA.MISC)
  220. which accepts pictures of other un-specified categories.

  222. HKPA.***** is called a subdivided archive.

  224. Inside each subdivided archive, there are few special text files of
  225. informations. The common ones are the following:

  228. README.DONORS    Rules and how to contribute pictures for a particular
  229.         subdivided archive.

  231. There are other information files for each subdivided archive. Please

  237. Unfortunately, we don't have any mirror sites which contain the full
  238. duplication of HKPA file base. However, there is one for HKPA.POPSTARS
  239. though. The location is:

  244. This site is situated in Finland. Users in Europe are encouraged to obtain 
  245. pictures from nic.funet.fi, in order to reduce the net traffic in

  257. subdivided archive (or sub-archive). They are assigned the name HKPA.*****

  263. As the picture contributors of HKPA probably read soc.culture.hongkong,
  264. please post your requests to soc.culture.hongkong newsgroup for best
  265. chance of feedbacks. If posting news is not allowed in your site, you can
  266. then consider asking the person-in-charge of a particular sub-divided
  267. archive, to which your request is related, to post it for you.

  282. There are 2 ways:
  283.  
  284. i) By using the command 'ftp' in an Unix/VMS(VAX) account:
  285.  
  286. You can login to asia.lcs.mit.edu by ftp & get files as follows:
  287. (Note that U means Unix ftp & V means VMS ftp, no letters specified in step
  288.  number means it applies to both ftp versions.)
  289.  
  290. Step 1) Unix/Vax prompt> ftp asia.lcs.mit.edu
  291.     [a bunch of text]

  309.      You may use the command '? [command name]' or 'help [command name]' for
  310.      the online help screen during a ftp session.
  311.  
  312. ii) By using ftp mail server, ONLY if you don't have access to 'ftp' in your
  313.     account. You are required to send a request mail, which contains a set of
  314.     commands, to the mail server. Those commands include the functions like-
  315.     a) Which ftp site you want to connect to; b) The directory where the
  316.     requesting file is in; c) What the file type is; d) What file you want to
  317.     get; e) What kind of encoding scheme you want to encode the file before
  318.     sending back to you; and f) whether you want the encoded file to be
  319.     splitted and the size of each piece.
  320.  
  321.     Then the mail server will ftp to the site specified in a), go to the
  322.     directory specified in b), set to binary/ascii mode according to c),
  323.     get the file you want as specified in d). Then the server will send it
  324.     back to you by mail in uuencoded or other format (if applicable)
  325.     according to e). We recommend the use of uuencode mode for e). If you
  326.     specify in a command that you want the file to be splitted, it will
  327.     mail the file piece by piece, with each piece of size specified in f)
  328.     bytes. We recommend the split mode as some mail system cannot handle
  329.     large mails.
  330.  
  331.     There are only a few ftp mail servers available so far. Here are the
  332.     ones I got.
  333.  
  334.     1)    ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com
  335.     2)    ftpmail@cs.uow.edu.au
  336.  
  337.     You can obtain a help mail from those servers by sending a mail to the
  338.     above address, with nothing in Subject: line. Then type 'help' on the
  339.     first line follow by 'quit' on the second line of the mail body.
  340.  
  341.     Below is an example request mail to get files from asia.lcs.mit.edu.
  342.     It applies to the mail server 1). Subject line of the request mail
  343.     can be any.
  344.

  354. Please also get and read the information text files in the archive.
  355. Please get the file HK****.index from a particular subdivided archive
  356. for a list of brief description of the pictures. You don't need to set
  357. uuencode mode for the text files. Only binary files are necessary.
  358.  
  359. After sending the request mail, you may need to wait for about half to
  360. a day for the files. After receiving the files in mail, you need to
  361. uudecode those mails to recreate the original binary files, if they are
  362. sent uuencoded. To uudecode a file, type 'uudecode <filename>' at Unix
  363. prompt. If you are a VMS(VAX) user, please read question 3022 part iv on
  364. how to uudecode a received file.
  365.  
  366. If you want a binary file to be splitted, you have to append the mails
  367. into one file before uudecode.
  368.

  370. 3022)    How do I get pictures from USENET newsgroups?
  371.  
  372. New incoming pictures are also posted to the Usenet newsgroups:
  373. alt.binaries.pictures, alt.binaries.pictures.misc
  374.  
  375. The pictures are uuencoded and posted in a number of articles (parts).
  376. One must save and append them together in the order of part number.
  377. Remove the "-----Cut Here-----" lines and uudecode the appended file.
  378.  
  379. i) For those running 'rn' or 'trn' in Unix:
  380.     - g <desired newsgroup>
  381.       goto the newsgroup you want
  382.     - ... use your favorite method of jumping to the message with
  383.       part #1 of the GIF file you want
  384.     - w file1
  385.       save as a file with the part no (ie. 1) attached to filename.
  386.     - ... repeat the above two procedures to save all the parts to
  387.       different files by jumping to part 2, save with filename
  388.       with 2 attached, then part 3,.... and so on until done.
  389.     - another way is to save it all in one shot with (in rn)
  390.       /<rootname>/w filename.
  391.     - ... remove all lines above and including the "-----Cut Here-----"
  392.       line near the start of the file.
  393.     - ... remove all lines below and including the "-----Cut Here-----"
  394.       line near the end of the file.
  395.     - append all the files into one file IN ORDER of part number.
  396.     - uudecode <filename>
  397.       <filename> being the big file containing all the parts in
  398.       order.  This will recreate the GIF file.
  399.  
  400. ii) For those using rn and have the uuconc program:
  401.     - list all the Subjects with the "=" command
  402.     - write the postings in order to one file in append mode
  403.       (ie. {msg# of part1},...,{msg# of last part} w {filename})
  404.     - when it asks if you want full pathname, type "n"
  405.     - feed this file through uunconc (ie. "uunconc filename")
  406.       and there you have it.
  407.  
  408. iii) For those using 'nn' in Unix:
  409.     - G <desired newsgroup>
  410.       goto the desired newsgroup, in this case alt.binaries.pictures...
  411.     - press 'a' to list all the articles or 'j' to list only the unread
  412.       articles.
  413.     - select the parts which construct a picture you want.
  414.     - press 'W' to save the selected parts. When the prompt "save on"
  415.       appears, you can edit the path of the file to be written on.
  416.       The parts will be saved and appended in the order from the
  417.       uppermost selection to the bottom-most.
  418.     - remove the "-----Cut Here-----" lines and the text in-between
  419.       manually by an editor.
  420.     - uudecode <saved file>
  421.       decode the file back to binary GIF file.
  422.  
  423. iv) For those using 'news' in VMS(VAX):
  424.     - NEWS> select <desired newsgroup>
  425.       goto the desired newsgroup, in this case alt.binaries.pictures...
  426.     - find out the news parts which construct a picture you want.
  427.     - NEWS> extract <filename> <first news item no.>-<last news item no.>
  428.       e.g.: extract iwan02.uu 5120-5124
  429.       Where iwan02.uu is the file for the parts to be saved. The news
  430.       of items number 5120 to 5124 are saved in order and appended.
  431.     - remove the "-----Cut Here-----" lines and the text in-between
  432.       manually by a text editor.
  433.     - transfer the saved file back to the local machine where a viewer
  434.       software is available. (In most cases, such a machine is a PC).
  435.       You can transfer it by using the command 'kermit' in VMS.
  436.       Remember you must set the following in VMS kermit prior to the
  437.       transfer:
  438.       kermit-VMS> set block 3        /* use CRC error check */
  439.       kermit-VMS> set file type binary    /* binary file transfer mode */
  440.       kermit-VMS> send <filename>        /* then start the transfer */
  441.       /* then use 'receive' command/function on the PC kermit program */
  442.       You must also set the kermit program in PC (the local machine)
  443.       to the above modes. It depends on what kermit program you use.
  444.       The one which has a set of similar commands to VMS kermit is
  445.       called MS-kermit for PC. It is available in most popular ftp
  446.       sites. In addition, Telix, Telemate & Procomm also support kermit.
  447.     - uudecode the transferred file in the local machine back to binary
  448.       GIF file. Then you can view it in the local machine.
  449.       uudecode program and similar variants can be obtained from most
  450.       popular ftp sites. There is one for PC in ftp site: ahkcus.org
  451.       [192.55.187.25]. The file is uuduue20.exe in directory /src/pc.
  452.       If you don't have access to ftp, you can use ftp mail server (see
  453.       question 3021 part ii). In this case you need to obtain the file
  454.       uudecode.bas instead. It is a source code written in BASIC. You
  455.       need to run it on qbasic which comes with MSDOS 5.0 at the very
  456.       first time. It then creates 2 executable files: uuencode.com &
  457.       uudecode.com. Then you can type "uudecode" at the MSDOS prompt.
  458.       Type the name of the transferred file. It'll then decode the file.
  459.

  461. 3023)    How do I view pictures on UNIX X-Windows?
  462.  
  463. For more complete information, you are referred to comp.graphics group
  464. and its FAQ. As far as I know, news on new viewer and image processor
  465. software can also be read in newsgroups such as alt.graphics.pixutils and
  466. alt.binaries.pictures.utilities.
  467.  
  468. I'd strongly suggest the viewer software 'xv'. Read its manual by
  469. 'man xv' for operating instructions. If you don't have access to it,
  470. you have to obtain its source code (src) file from ftp sites and
  471. compile it using the command 'make' in usual cases. (Please also read **)
  472. Example viewer software which support GIF are as follows:
  473.  
  474. i) xloadimage, xsetbg, xview -
  475.     Works on b&w or color displays, see the manual pages to view
  476.     the GIF file as a window or to set the image on the
  477.     background, it should be available on most sites, otherwise,
  478.     src is obtainable via anonymous ftp, export.lcs.mit.edu
  479.     [18.24.0.12], /contrib/xloadimage.3.01.tar.Z). 
  480.  
  481. ii) xv - src in
  482.     foo.{x,y}.ext means there are 2 files called, foo.x.ext and
  483.     foo.y.ext.  The newer version (2.11 up) takes both JPEG and TIFF
  484.     formats as well. The sites and full pathnames are---
  485.     - export.lcs.mit.edu, /contrib/xv-2.{11,21}.tar.Z
  486.     - nic.funet.fi [128.214.6.100],
  487.         /pub/X11/contrib/xv-2.{20,11}.tar.Z)
  488.     - ftp.cis.upenn.edu [130.91.6.8], /pub/xv-2.{11,21}.tar.Z
  489.  
  490. ** Note on how to obtain and compile source code files such as *.tar.Z:
  491.  
  492.     - You can recover the files by working from right to left to
  493.       resolve the suffices using the following rules, an example
  494.       will follow.
  495.     - .Z - Get the src file from ftp site the same way as getting
  496.       picture files. When you are in the shell, use uncompress(1)
  497.       to restore the .Z compressed files (read compress(1) man page
  498.       as well).
  499.     - .tar - In the shell, type "tar xvf foo.tar" to extract the

  521. I'd suggest the following software: Paint Shop Pro (PSPRO101.ZIP) or
  522. latest versions for Windows 3.x. Make sure your Windows 3.x is installed
  523. a SVGA video driver. So that it can display at least 256 colors.

  525. There are many programs available and some of them enable you to print
  526. the pictures.  The binaries can be obtained at the following ftp site: 
  527. - wuarchive.wustl.edu [128.252.235.4], /mirrors/msdos/gif for MSDOS
  528.   software; /mirrors/msdos/windows3 for Windows 3.x software. The index
  529.   is "00-index.txt", get that file and then choose what you want.

  624. 3054)    How do I maximize the quality of a picture from a scanner?
  625.  
  626. This is not an easy question. It depends on what scanner software
  627. you have. If you have a color scanner which offers 256 (8-bit) colors
  628. or less, don't expect too much from it.
  629.  
  630. If your color scanner offers more than 8-bit colors, but the picture
  631. doesn't look "smooth" or looks grainy, the problem may be in one/more
  632. of the following: 
  633.  
  634. i)    The scanner software. How it records the information from the
  635.     scanner. If the software can save in 16 million color (24-bit)
  636.     picture format such as TIFF, TGA, BMP, the problem may be in
  637.     the next items. If the software can only save in 8-bit color
  638.     format, don't worry. Read the next items first!!
  639.  
  640. ii)    The paper quality. You won't get good quality scan from pictures
  641.     on un-smooth glossy paper. Also, it is no good too when you scan
  642.     small pictures on thin magazine paper (such as the paper used
  643.     in the large "nosey megazines"). Matte paper is the best.
  644.  
  645. iii)    The quality of publishings. All pictures you see in every kinds
  646.     of publishings are dithered (i.e.: consists of tiny dots/pixels.
  647.     Look at a picture closely and you'll see). Depends on the dot
  648.     pattern and size, you may see the "wrinkles" on the scanned
  649.     picture. The quality can be improved by turning the source by a
  650.     small angle and rescan it. Also, use lower resolution (200 DPI
  651.     or less) with large picture source may help. Photographs don't
  652.     have such problem anyway.
  653.  
  654. If the scanned image is a bit out of focus, you can apply sharpness or
  655. edge enhancement filter in your image processor to improve the focus.
  656. However, it also emphasizes the "wrinkles" if scanned from publishings.
  657. Moreover, excessive application of filtering will degrade image quality.

  981. We have a naming convention for the GIF picture filenames for 
  982. HKscenic files. Pictures are separated into three categories:
  983. Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territory. The year of the 
  984. picture is also attached to the filename to indicate the time
  985. of this picture. Then a counter is tagged onto the end which is 
  986. incremented as the number of files grow. The basic syntax is
  987. as shown below where YYYY is for the year and [a-z] is the
  988. letter that I will tag on as the archive grows. 
  989.  
  990. Filename syntax:

  992.   HK Island,      use hkYYYY[a-z].gif
  993.   Kowloon,        use kwYYYY[a-z].gif
